Xbox emulation with non-Steam games

I've been trying to use my Dualsense as an input device with Steam support, but I can't seem to get it working.

It works fine with DualSenseX, but apparently Steam has built-in support without the need of having it emulated as an Xbox controller.

But I can't get this to work within non-Steam games.

I pair to windows via Bluetooth, go to controller setup in Steam, it recognizes the controller as Dualsense. I enable Playstation controller support, go and add my non-Steam game to Steam, launch it.... And nothing. Controller does nothing.

It works fine within steam, it works in Big Picture mode, I can even go into managing the layout of the controller per game from Steam, but once I launch the game, it won't work. What gives? What am I missing, how can I set up the dualsense to work via Steam controller support (and without DualSenseX)?
