Prediction: The U.K. suggestions in this thread will be quite different from the U.S.A./Canada etc. ones.
The Pogues feat. Kirsty McColl - The Fairytale of New York
(Probably in fact the best song ever, also)
Mike Oldfield - In Dulce Jubilo
I haven't heard this in ages. I remembered it as being an entirely synth song, but listening to it now I hear that
it's actually mainly woodwind going through a bunch of filters with light synth strings backing it up. Sort of like
an early "Julie and Candy". Fuck. YES. That + the regimental drumming = fantastic. TIMELESS.
Hmm, all celtic music so far. Celtic stuff is wonderful. (Yeah, In Dulci Jubilo is technically German, but this version is definitely has strong Celtic influences.)
Now for the Beatles contributions.
Lennon & Yoko Ono - So This is Christmas
Paul McCartney - (Simply Having A) Wonderful Christmas Time
Both good. Check out the synth bassline on the McCartney one. Classic.
Chris De Burgh - A Spaceman Came Travelling
I always thought this was a bit too trippy for Chris De Burgh...
Note: I think this was the 2nd MP3 I ever downloaded.
I also like the title because it makes me imagine a spaceman breaking the rules of baskeball.
Pretenders - 2000 Miles
Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry
Probably the most depressing Xmas song.
Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody
Wizzard - I Wish It Could be Christmas Everyday
Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas?
There, that's my stupid thread. I'm a big kid and will always live in that happy place inside my head where I was 5 years old.
I think all of these songs are British. I don't think other countries have the same idea of Xmas as we do.
