Desert Drifter
Out From Under A Rock..
(Revised: Dec 29, 07)
This is for those new to the emulation world of Nintendo…
You need an emulator (the program) and the ROMs (the games) to play them on your PC, though don’t forget the system requirements that go along with it to be able to play them perfectly on your PC. Just to note: ROM files are “universal”, meaning they work on any operating system, but not the emulator, for they may require to run on a certain OS…
Here are some emulators listed below to check out, though the ROMs are for you to find, hence illegal to list links to them, but will list the ROM and other file extensions for each gaming consol that are used with the emulator…
-----------------------------------
-- Nintendo - NES:
-ROM Extensions: .nes
-Save Extensions: .sav (Save file) / .nst & .ns? (Save slot files – Nestopia only) (? = slot number)
-Cheat File Extensions: .cht (Game Genie)
-Translation/Patch File Extension: .ips
-Other Extensions: .unf (ROM image) / .fds (Famicom Disk image) / .nsf (Sound file) / .nsp (Script File / .nsv (Movie file)
+ Nestopia
http://nestopia.sourceforge.net/
(Works great, full screen and filtering options. Currently using version 1.09, since I don’t have DirectX9, and works perfect, though more available options in 1.37…)
+ NESten
http://tnse.zophar.net/
(Okay, but doesn’t seem to work great for me, but might for others…)
-----------------------------------
-- Super Nintendo - SNES:
-ROM Extensions: .smc / .srm / .swc / .fig
-Save File Extensions: .srm (Save file) / .zst & .zs? (Save slot file – ZSNES only) (? = save slot number)
-Cheat File Extensions: .cht (Game Genie)
-Translation/Patch File Extension: .ips
-Other Extensions: .zmv & .zm? (A recorded game play file – ZSNES only) (? = movie slot number) / .mzt & .mz? (Another recorded game play file type – ZSNES v1.51 only) (? = movie slot number) / .inp (Input file – ZSNES v 1.51 only)
+ ZSNES
http://zsnes.com/
(The best SNES emulator out there w/ movie recordings, net play, and you name it, though others seem to disagree…Currently using v1.36, which seems to work perfect, though v1.51 has new features, but a few annoying glitches that prevent some games to not run correctly and constant problems with secondary devices…)
+ SNES9x
http://www.snes9x.com/
(The second best emulator, more of a windows type, though I have heard it is more “universal” with other operating systems…)
-----------------------------------
-- Gameboy - GB:
(Regular / Color / & Advance)
-ROM Extensions: .gb (Gameboy) / .gbc (Gameboy Color) / .gba (Gameboy Advance)
-Save File Extension: .sav (Save file) / ?.sgm (Save slot file – Visual Boy Advance only) (? = slot number)
-Cheat File Extension: .clt (GameShark )
-Translation/Patch File Extension: .ips
+ Visual Boy Advance
http://vba.ngemu.com/index.shtml
(The best of the best for all Gameboy emulation...)
-----------------------------------
-- Nintendo 64 – N64:
-ROM Extensions: .z64 / .v64 / .rom
-Save File Extension: .eep (Save file) / .sra (Save file) / .fla (Save file) / .pj?.zip (Compressed save file – PJ64 Only) (? = slot number) / .sav? (Save slot file – 1964 only) (? = slot number)
-Cheat File Extensions: (GameShark codes built in – one large file “.cht”)
+ PJ64
http://www.pj64-emu.com/
(The best and still in “developmental” process and working more of the games then any...)
+ 1964
http://1964emu.emulation64.com/
(Second best, though not much progress lately, but greater on CPU speed…)
+ Mupen64
http://mupen64.emulation64.com/
(Another not so bad emulator, though I been focusing on the other two more. Seems to be also compatible on other operating systems…)
(Plugins)
NOTE: The plugins consist of Video (Graphic), Audio (Sound), Input (Controller), & RSP (Reality Signal Processor), though some work better then others for some PCs…
Best so far:
- Audio: Azimer’s HLE v0.56 WIP 2
- Input: N-Rage’s Direct-Input8 v2-1.82
- Video: (Test around, not all work for everyone...)
- RSP: (Test around, not all work for everyone...)
(Plugins – Official Home)
+ Gln64
http://gln64.emulation64.com/links.html
(Great plugin, seems to fix a number of problems…)
+ Rice Video
https://ricevideo.bountysource.com/
(Another great plugin, has a lot of experimental options…)
(Plugins – Download Sites)
+ Ngemu
http://www.ngemu.com/n64
(Plugins are located down on side bar, may have to pick a category...)
+ E-lation
http://www.e-lation.net/site/index_plugins.html
(Has most plugins, but some things are in German. Sorry about that, though for me, can’t read all of it either, so don’t feel so bad...)
+ Zophar’s Domain
http://www.zophar.net/n64.html
(Mostly a list of emulators, though use to have tons of plugins and utilities…)
-----------------------------------
That’s all I have for now, as for Gamecube and beyond… maybe I’ll cover those some day, but right now, their still in the process of being perfected…
