how to use netplay on znes

It's easy. First, you need an older version of ZSNES such as 1.42 (newer versions don't support netplay yet; I'm not sure why), but some people report that version 1.36 works even better than 1.42 in terms of compatibility.

To play online, one of you must be the host. When hosting a netplay session, you must give your friend (the client) your IP address so he can connect to you.

Things you should consider before hosting or connecting to a netplay session:

  • You two must have exactly the same ROM (same version and probably the same ROM filename).
  • Before loading a game, be sure you two must have your ZSNES emulators pointing to the ROM directory. You can achieve this by clicking on Game --> Load and then browse to your ROM directory. Don't load any game yet! Just browse to the directory where your ROMs are and hit the "X" button to close the window. It doesn't matter if your ROMs are in a different location than your friend, but the important is that the emulator must point to the ROMs directory.
  • It is recommended that you two use an uncompressed file (not in .zip) to accomplish the above.
  • Disable your firewall or add ZSNES to the firewall's exception list. This way you will allow ZSNES to receive incoming data. Your friend must do the same.
Now, start a netplay session. Don't change anything but your name. Leave everything else as they are.

Give your IP to your friend. If you are unsure about your IP, on that window you'll see it or click here.

After this, click on Start as server.

Your friend must enter your IP address and click on Connect to server.

If the connection works, a chat window will appear with some settings below. There, you can specify which one will be Player 1 and Player 2, the delay and some other configuration. The most important is setting the delay. By default it's 03. If you two have a fast internet connection, set it to 01.

If the connection doesn't work, try disabling Allow UDP connection.

When you are ready to start, load the game as you would normally do. When the game loads, it will be loaded for your friend automatically. Don't close the chat window or else, the connection will close.

To chat in game, press the chat key ("T" by default).

If this configuration is tricky for you, you can try ZBattle (instructions and usage are explained there).
