Linux is based on unix an operating system fore sciencetists linux kernel was created by Linus Torvalds a finish programmer.
Unlike unix which was for money and closed source at that time linux was open source and its still opensource.
Linux by meaning of open source can be edited by anyone by that i mean his code and appearance can be remaked in any way.
Also because is fixed very fast it can be used as normal daily used operating system replaced mac os and windows.
Linux have free software which can be used without paying for anything.
There are many "flavors" of linux with many eye appealing features.
Right now is used by 1.8 or 2 % but its grow more every time.
