Hard to say if its a good idea.

    Pros
    1. The modchip will allow you to unbrick your PSP should you brick it accidently.
    2. Homebrew available to your no matter what original firmware you are running.
    3. Downgrade to any firmware.

    Cons
    1. The undiluted Platinum Modchip only works on early models of PSP.
    2. Hard to find. I think only a small batch were ever made.
    3. 3.50 could be hacked tomorrow then youve just waste your money.
    4. Store two firmwares on your PSP.
    5. Very difficult to install. You'll need more than "hobbist" skill in soldering, else you may need to pay a pro to do it, pushing up the cost.
    6. Not many people have them, so little help available out there.
    7. Software for the modchip is supposed to be open source. But the team behind U.P. havent released it nor have they updated it in ages.
    8. Many believe the whole project has been abandonded.
    9. Sony could detect the modchip?? Blocking you from certain services?? the PS3?? Ban you from infrastruture games across the net, like M$ with the Xbox and XBL??

There is a new modchip that should be released soon that will work with all PSP revisions. Although no one is 100% sure its real and not just a hoax.
