the best protection is using your brain while browsing online.

I have not had any virus/firewall protection for the past year and i have had no problems whatsoever. The only thing i keep is spyware blaster and spybot s&d

You'll get hit eventually. It's inevitable. If you were really using your brain you'd have at least some form of protection aside from spyware. And for all you know you could have a trojan sitting on your PC, or various other silent exploits sneaking in via security holes in Windows and/or IE

when i did have antivirus software.. it never picked up anything and was just taking up system resources so i just got rid of everything.

And I'm the only one using this computer so i know which websites are safe and which ones aren't. And so far, I dont see anything out of the ordinary. And even if i get hit.. i have nothing sensitive on this computer and all my other data is already backed up.

I'm not saying antivirus software is unnecessary in general.. i still have antivirus stuff installed on my parents computer. For me.. it's just about knowing what stuff is safe to download and which sites i trust.

    The best protection for me:

    • Don't watch porn on the net. Most porn sites are bundled with viruses, trojans, etc.
    • Disable live scanning or antivirus monitor to save up resouces. Check for viruses manually, specially .exe files.
    • Firewall. Windows firewall is shit, so get a good one. It's annoying, but safer.
    • And above of all things, Mozilla Firefox.

Its rare in my place to have a pc with internet connection. Most of people go to some kind of NetCafe (Thats where i type this). This computer use AVG for virus protection. AVG protect pc from virus, trojan, spyware, but cannot erase some virus file (inactive?).

A lot of virus spread case that happened usually begin from people who unaware that they have burn CD that contain virus file, which they click it on their home pc .

I use trend micro software, it's really effective. You can also use any good firewall, zone alarm is recommended. I also run HijackThis regularly to check my computer for other undesired stuff.

Although I agree that most people have to blame themselves for getting viruses, I can't use the PC without protection. Whenever I need a cracked prog, chances are fairly big it's infected in some way. Also, it's not that difficult to end up at a site which is dangerous when you're Googling.
I use AntiVir, Hitman 2 (Anti-spyware) and Windows Firewall. I know Windows Firewall is not that good, but I can't get any other free firewall which works with the NDS WiFi Connector
