Gamepad suggestions?

I'm getting back into emulation again after years of not, and I need a SNES or PS1-style gamepad. I already have an Xbox 360 controller but I find the direction pad to be oddly placed, and also it's not quite ideal in terms of feel. Is there a good controller that has a decent d-pad that isn't oddly placed like most gamepads with analog?

You can try using a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 controller through an USB adapter.

Really? Where's the best place to get one of those? I wasn't even aware such a thing existed.

I'm sure there are many of them on eBay. You can check this one for instance. I don't know how good they are since I've never tried them.
