the story in terms of Laguna being the father then it makes more sense in certain areas. Of course its open for speculation - just as Square intended (or were too lazy to tie up - who knows)

Hrm. FFVIII was the first game in which Squaresoft abandoned plots for adults and decided sloth-like deus ex machinas and cutesiness were more profitable. Turns out that was right alas.
