You are right. There are far too many companies who don't have a clue and the market is extremely saturated - its alarming. I knew quite well of all that but - I've been into web dev and graphic design for a few good years now (and am currently working for a web design company) but not because of wanting "easy" money - instead because I enjoy it. So, I've decided to just take the plunge and see how it goes. Encouraging words or not I'll ride the horse until its dead and gone - as stupid as it sounds.
Who knows - maybe my area needs some new designers. Guess we'll find out soon enough.
BTW - the term 'specialist' is obviously thrown around too loosely. I'd hope those who call themselves specialists are indeed worthy of such a title. <_<
