Chrono Trigger

I recently got this rom from a buddy, I get to a certain point where I must enter a code infront of a console. Those of you who are familiar with the game, it is after you defeat the large Guardian Robot of the food supply. Pretty early in the game. I am told to hold L + R then press A. I do this, with the proper keys (D+C then X) but nothing happens. I have triple checked the input keys, made sure I was facing the console (it has a shiny mark on it, must be right).

Any idea how I can get past this place?
