Question re: fce ultra and nes controller

We are new at all this so I will start by apologizing for our ignorance...

We have about a bazillion NES games on our computer and they run w/ FCE Ultra. We just got a usb controller for them and can't figure out how to get it to work. Is it even possible and if so, how?? Thanks!
