By having a S3 Graphics and an AC'97 audio I assume you have a Biostar motherboard (like me). This board has VIA chipsets so you can find the drivers for them at VIA Arena.

But there you'll find two types of audio drivers: AC'97 and Vinyl. Any of them works, but I strongly recommend that you install the Vinyl one.

Thanks Butters, seeing as you recommend the vinyl they must be better than what I have, I have a look!

Thanks, all of this stuff is really annoying me now! Right I've tried downloading 2 Vinyl types, I've tried the 1st one and 3rd one.

Can you look here nad help me please! :)

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&OSID=1&CatID=1010

I've tried installing the 3rd one but all I get is a music deck thing and now my sound doesn't work, it's all really annoying!

Can you tell me which one you think is best to download?

Here is my FULL computer profile, certain drivers are more suited to different motherboards etc, can you help. I understand I need a driver a codec and a third party device, here ->

Hi! I've downloaded this, tried updating the C-Media AC97 Audio Device Driver but it didn't allow it to, couldn't reach location, but it did once but it said it couldn't find any better hardware. I've tried updating the driver for all 3 audio components:

C-Media AC97 Audio Device

MPU 401 Compatible MIDI Device

Unimodem Half Duplex Audio Device

But no luck on any of them... :(

Oh, yours is not VIA but C-Media. Try Googling (yeah, it's officially a verb) for C-Media drivers.

Hi yeah, I've been looking around I've found one and have just installed it, it was described like this. The driver date and code is different, my previous driver date was in the year 2001, but this one is 2004, so it should work.

C-Media CMI9739A/9761 Software Audio Drivers

Support model All MSI MB with onboard C-Media CMI9739A/9761 audio codec controller.

Description • Support C-Media CMI9739A/9761 audio codec controller
• Driver version: 5.12.01.0044 (WinXP/2000/ME/98), 5.12.01.0008, (WinXP 64bit)

Date - 2004-12-7

Site Link - http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_list.php?part=1&kind=3&CHIP=3&ID=1

2nd to bottom, is the one I downloaded and installed.

Do I have to connect a different codec or what??? I understand there is 3 differnt comonents do I do have to connect something or update all devices?

You really need to find out what model and brand your motherboard is, so you can go look up its technical details, then you will know for sure what audio chipset you have and what drivers you need

lol! I know I sound REALLY stupid but I'm still having a bit of trouble *I wish I hadn't updated my driver to begin with now!* Anyway I've downloaded the appropriate driver/s for the C-Media AC97 Audio Device but nothing is still working. I think the problem is to do with the other components like Codecs and MIDI sound, maybe I've got something missing? Do they need to link up in someway and maybe the settings are incorrect. I'm so confused, can someone just explain to me simply because I really want the sound back on my computer! :(

I've got these audio devices too:

1. C-Media AC97 Audio Device

Driver Version- 5.12.1.39 Date- 11/04/2003 (I've tried loads)

Signature - Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

2. MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device

Driver Version - 5.1.2535.0 Date- 07/01/2001

3. Unimodem Half Duplex Device

Driver Version - 5.1.2535.0 Date - 01/26/1999

And loads of other audio thingys i.e codecs and other drivers.

Here is my sounds and audio settings/properties at present also:

Sound Scheme - Windows Default

Audio -

Sound Playback - Default Device - C-Media Wave Device

Sound Recording - " "

MIDI Music Playback - Default Device - Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth & I've got MPU-401 (Should I pick this instead?)

Voice

Voice Playback- C-Media Wave Device

Voice Recording - " "

There's a 'Test Hardware' tab,I think I'll try that!

Sorry for the exhaustive info, just want it fixed.

Thanks

Maybe you messed it up with something else. Try deleting (via Add or Remove Programs) your audio driver and install it again.

Codecs and MIDI has absolutely nothing to do with audio drivers.

Ok thanks Butters!, I'll do this now, be back soon! :D

EDIT- Right I've uninstalled the WDM Driver and when I go onto Device Manager now, this device shows up for the first time and an error icon is on it : Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver shows up, what do I do??

On Device Status it says- A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

How would I Reinstall it, I've tried updating the driver for it, but this doesn't work???

EDIT X2 - I've installed the audio driver for the C-Media Audio device again, but there is still no sound. I might have to dig out the cd that came with my computer to install all default drivers. What do you think?

EDIT X3- I've just installed the lastest codec driver which was released this year! I got it from here on the first thread.

http://www.cmedia.com.tw/forums/viewtopic.php?t=168&sid=42a53baf027eaee5f6696027e57e311a

Is this a reliable source d'ya think? Anyway it doesn't work still, there's still something I'm missing, I can feel it!, it's obvious too! :)

Do what you said on EDIT X2 and post a screen of your device manager.

As for EDIT X3, you said yours was AC'97. Get that one.

Latest AC'97 driver- version 51.3

yeah I've installed the latest one, but there is still no sound, so when you say do what I said on EDIT X2, Do you mean use the original installation cd??
