Controller Headache

Hi all, I've just got the FCE ULTRA emulator and installed fine but for the life of me i can't get my controller to work. I am using a ps1 dual shock controller with Usb adaptor but i have absolutely no idea how to configure it to play!
Do i need a nintendo controller or is there a way to make it work?
I'm sorry for asking such a stupid question and i know others have asked but i've read most posts on the subject and couldn't find any specific directions.

Run FCEUltra, then menu "Config" -> "Input" -> "Port 1:" section, select "Gamepad" on the combobox, click "Configure": A new "Gamepad" window should appear, click the key you want to config on "Virtual Gamepad 1" section, then press the real gamepad key you want to use for that, click "close". Repeat until you're done and hopefully it would work.
