How do you know if a game requires a chd to run or not?

Some romsets can be put straight into mame and play, whereas others are not even recognized. This happened with Killer Instinct until I got a chd and then I gave Jago the beating of his life, ninja punk.

So, how do you know if you need a chd, without getting all technical?

Start MAME32 and you can check categories on the left side in which you will see CHD category.

Thanks for the info, I don't suppose you know how to reduce/increase difficulty levels of games?
