You only need a joystick/gameapd compatible with Direct Input, I'd say the 100% available now do the job. The best solution for me it's to get an USB adapter if you already have a nice console game pad, PSX/PS2, GC or Xbox adapters are cheap and work perfectly, and the quality of the original ones it's outstanding.

Once you have a Direct Input compatible pad, you have to select an inplut plugin (Jabo's default should work, though). Then go to menu "Options" -> "Configure Input Plugin..." -> On "Game Devices" combo box choose your joystick, and check the "Controller is plugged" box. Now you're ready to remap the keys, click the buttons near the respective keys and press the joystick button/direction you prefer.

Control = Input. There're only two more options, come on!

I can't show you Direct Input: It's the DirectX specific part four game input, a group of applications and libraries (dll's). Just follow what I told you before and it will work. You only need to install the gamepad drivers if it's needed: With the gamepad you'll got the exact instructions to do so.

Also every new game pad you can buy today it's compatible with Direct Input, so it would work with Project64 and every emulator/gamed using DirectX (well, almost 100% I'd say). Just get the gamepad/josystick you prefer.
