Default Getting the game name from a rom

I've been trying to get the names of the games out of my roms. A while back I converted all my roms to file names of 8 characters (ie, superm~1.smc, for a mates xbox) and I lost my originals some how :/ Anyway, now I'd like to get the file names back to the games full name (ie Super Mario Brothers.smc), but I can't get it. I've tried a hex editor, but the names arent stored in text, so I tried loading snes9x, which gets the game names from the roms when you go to open one, and debugging that to get the names from the file list, which got me really close but still no go If anyone knows where I can get the file format for the roms I can write the program to rename them all. Or maybe one exists but I doubt it? Or can I make zsnes load the game names somehow? Cause that's the real problem, if I used snes9x I can see the game names but zsnes doesn't, so I've got stuff like

    superm~1.smc
    superm~2.smc
    superm~3.smc
    superm~4.smc
    superm~5.smc

and any one of them could be super mario (mario's just an example there's lots more)

I hope this makes sense, and thanks in advance for any help

ps - I'm not going to manually rename 2000 roms, so please dont suggest that

Try to use audit rom managers such as GoodSNES (GoodTools) or NSRT.
