freezes when I turn sound off

Game: Digimon World 3
I decided to listen to some music on Youtube rather than the in-game audio. Whenever I go from one map to another, it freezes on the screen that says the name of the area

I did find a work-around by abusing another bug, although it is a bit inconvenient. Turn sound off, turn it back on. Sound still doesn't play sound but doesn't suffer the freezing problem. To get sound back I have to reset the game
