I'm not that savvy

Playing FireRed, I saved the file in game which creates the .sav file. Went to load and instead of opening the .zip file and clicking FireRed like usual I went to load and clicked the .sgm file. Now I back at 2 1/2 hrs in the game instead of the 50 hrs that I had put in. This is frustrating as I have combed the internet for the last hour or so looking at a way to reopen it. It says the file is unsupported visualboy save game version 0. I am using Visualboy Advance Emulator Version 1.8.0-beta 3. Any help to getting it back to where it was would be much appreciated.
