New to MAME/Emulators, need assistance

I just downloaded the most recent MAME to play Mortal Kombat. I am using MotionInJoy to use my PS3 controller to play it, however a lot of the buttons are not working correctly even though I thought I set them up, and I know it works because I use the controller on other games. Can someone help me figure out what I need to change/where to do this?

Also, how do I make MAME a resizable window, I don't want the fullscreen.

mame <game> -window will make it a window. Can't help you with the controller issue though.

Don't mean to sound stupid but where do I type that? I'm at the "type name or select" screen and doing that doesn't do anything except load the game.

You need to go to the command prompt before doing anything.
Navigate to the folder where mame.exe is, and type in mame -cc
This creates a new file called mame.ini
Open this in Notepad, look for the line starting with window, and change the 0 to 1.
Save your changes. Now open mame in the usual way and all the games will be in a window.
