And on top of that he listed he likes ubuntu. The mere mention of win8 in a group of ubuntu users is like wave a red flag in from of a bull.
Look, what look, you can't even see the os. Its hidden behind this huge ugly mobile device like button grid. Its a pain in the ars just to get to the hidden start bar.

There is emulation on Linux. And you always have the option of installing a WINE compatibility layer. WINE and some of its forks are pretty advanced these days.
Also there is nothing wrong with Windows Aero and Emulation. Just disabled Desktop Composition in the shortcut properties. Problem solved.

There is no way you would make a mistake like that. Ubuntu is the gnome environment, if you dont like it use another. Kubuntu is my favorite, and there is Zubuntu if you like a very simple style. Also on linux you can switch from shell to shell or just use the console.
