Default GBA: Cheats and sub-byte variables?

My question: (Preferably within VisualBoy Advance, but other solutions are acceptable) Is there a way to write a cheatcode that targets specific bits within a byte, allowing the game to do as it will with the rest?

Background: I found the RAM address for some data that I would like to change. It reverts immediately if I simply modify it through the memory viewer, forcing me to use a cheat (or else frame advance my way through everything, changing it each time. ... no.)
Unfortunately, this address also stores other information within the same byte, the freezing of which causes undesirable side effects.

In short, the answer is no. However, it could be done if you changed the way the emulator operates....
