Default Keyboard configuration problems with emulators

Hello everyone, sorry if this has been asked, but I've searched the forum and googled this question with no success.

I just recently bought a new Asus laptop and downloaded all of my emulation-related junk that I had on my previous laptop. However, whenever I try to configure my keyboard controls, something weird happens. For example, in VBA, I would want my A button to be the Z key. However, instead of the letter Z showing up, a random number 0-9 would come up. No matter what letter or number I press, it's always a random number. If I try something like the shift keys or enter, those work just fine. This also happens in ePSXe. Is this a driver issue or just some kind of keyboard setting?

I am running 64-bit Windows 7, if that matters.

Edit: Just solved the problem. A friend suggested I uninstall ConstantGuard, a program Comcast internet suscribers get for free. Uninstalled it and everything works perfectly.

Yeah, such "crapware" can mess things up quite a bit.
