    how do you save in a gba emulator i save in every game i have but when i open it my save is gone

    In VisualBoyAdvance you can use save states or battery save(if the game supports it).

    Make sure to set up the proper directories from the configuration.

    The save files you are saving is most probabaly in *.sav format in the directory where you play the rom from. Did you find it? B)

    For me, I would go to Save State rather as it is faster.

    mine is in either .sav or SG1 format

    .sav are the "battery save" files. They are the files created when you select "save game" from an option within the game.
