Default Enabling sound makes Gens freeze... why?

As the topic says, if I disable sound the games play fine but as soon as I click Enable Gens freezes and I need to terminate the process to end it. I'm Windows 7 Home premium, core i5 520m and a geforce GT 230M and Directx 11.

    Any ideas?

Is gens designed to run with Windows 7 and DX11?. On the face of it I would say its probably a Direct Sound issue to do with Direct X. Might be that gens still requires creaky old DX9.0c.

So is there a way to get around it ? I don't really want to reinstall an earlier version of DirectX, I still use this laptop for current games.
