Default need some help getting a gamepad to work for nes/snes emulators

I am hoping someone can help me. I just got the Logitech dual action game pad. I was hoping it would work for the emulator on my laptop, but it doesn't. I have the Jnes emulator version 1.0 v0.6 and the Zsnes version
v1.51 When I plug the gamepad into the Usb port nothing is happening when play the games. I have gone into the configurations and selected gamepad, but this does nothing for me as well. Will this game pad even work for emulators? If not can someone tell me a gamepad to get that will work for me. I got this gamepad at Best Buy. I have a Toshiba laptop Satellite L355-S7812.

    Thanks

What happens when you connect it? Does the "Found new hardware" dialog shows up asking for drivers (rare, because the vast majority of USB gamepads today are PnP devices, so they don't require drivers). If so, did you install the drivers? They come in CD-ROM.

And if the above is Yes, did you try assigning buttons to each key?
