    Default MAME problems

Hello, it's been a long time since I've used a MAME emulator. So please excuse me if any of these things have been discussed before.

    1. I just recently downloaded the newest version of MAME (MAMEUI32 .133.5) and I also downloaded Mame cheats (XML Cheat Collection MAME 0.132). I followed the instructions to transfer the cheat file (unzipped) into the mame file and 'enable cheats' at the Default Game Options. I followed every step at Pugsy's site.

I wanted to play 'Splatterhouse' with cheats, but when I uploaded the game and pressed the tab button, the 'cheat' option never appeared. I tried quitting MAMe and restarting it, but still nothing.

    2. Some other games I downloaded (eg Alien vs. Predator, Metal Slug) can't be uploaded, even when I have downloaded the ROM and put it into the 'rom' file. It keeps saying 'ERROR: required files not found, game cannot be run'.

Could somebody please help me with these problems? I'd much appreciate it.

Cheat support has been up and down lately and you are using a 'u' WIP build. Try a different main release version.

Your roms need to be sourced from somewhere hosting up to date dumps (they can change regularly), most sites will state which version number of mame their roms are compatible with. Some games also require a system bios. Metal Slug for example is a neogoe game and won't work without the neogeo bios rom (neogeo.zip) being present in the mame/roms folder.

When you mention about the 'u' WIP build, are you referring to the MAME emulator or the MAME cheats?

The emulator. 'u' releases 0.135u3 fir example are WIP builds between versions and often contain bugs, broken drivers etc.

Thanks. I managed to get the cheats to work, plus Splatterhouse and AVP. However, Metal Slug still isn't working. I downloaded the neogeo rom and placed it in the 'rom' file in Mame. I also unzipped it.

There's still a message at the end saying that 'ERROR: required files not found, game cannot be run'. Is there something else I have to do or is there something I've done wrong?

Yes you leave the bios rom zipped just like a game rom. mame will use it when it needs it.

Dont unzip it, just leave it zipped in the mame/roms folder like any other mame game rom.

Nope. Still nothing. Mame starts off loading, then there's a long message which starts off like: 'sfix.sfix NOT FOUND' and then it goes back to 'ERROR: required files not found, the game cannot be run'.

sfix is an update added to the neo bios in recent months. Your source for the rom is out of date. Find an updated version of the bios file and it will work.
