actual game play/controler help

I have AdvanceMAME 0.87 and d/led TMNT arcade. Everything installed OK and the game launches but I am unable to play. I went in to the controllers tab and enabled both keyboard and game pad. I have a Microsoft SideWinder Plug n Play USB. Neither work. Are they specific keys assigned for play ? Any help is much appreciated. I've had NESticle for quite awhile now and am looking for something with simular ease of play. If a different MAME is in order please refer me to the better one.
