Missing the battle selection screen ...HELP SOMEONE????

Hey, it's taken me a week to find a good working copy of the final fantasy VII rom. I had sound problems and video problems but i finally found one thats works..but when i enter the battle sequences my options for the battle like "attack" ""item" and "materia" doesnt appear...its just a big black box but i can still press the action button to select the first option which is attack....can someone please let me know how to fix this i REALLY want to play this game again ...it's been years.. thanks for your help!!

First, PlayStation games are ISOs, not ROMs.

Second, try changing from OpenGL to Direct3D and vice versa. I had a similar problem on FFVIII with OpenGL.
