Is it safe to play my PS1 games via emulation?

I was told that my cd/dvd driver will play the games faster than my PS1 would. This could potentially cause damage. Is this true? I know the way around this is an ISO ripper but I couldn't find one that wasn't $20.

There will be no damage caused to the game due to any CD/DVD driver and the game won't run much faster than on the PS1. But you can limit the FPS, thanks to the graphics plugins available for it.
I play PS1 games on computer after making a back up of them and runnning them with the emulator.
I simple create a back up copy using UltraISO. I use the trial. Its great and its free. I do not pay for such things.

Its unlikely it will damage your disk, but lots of modern drives have trouble reading PS1 disks as they simply don't run slowly enough (the original disks were read at 1x or 2x speed!).

I was able to use that program to make an .iso. But for some reason when I extract the .iso to my desktop it doesn't show up. I've also done a search for the .iso and my computer couldn't find it. Do you know why this happens?

Actually I think I found out why. The trial version of that program can't save files greater than 300 MB. The disc I was using was 610 MB or so.

Why are you trying to extract the *.iso?
You can simply run the *.iso with the emulator.

EPSXE. I'm making an .iso of FFVIII but just the first disc is 600 MB so I can't save it with that program. I've figured out that that is the problem because although I can make the .iso, I can't save it.

Stoned Ape, I guess you are using an alternate way to create an ISO. I will tell how to do it if it is 600 MB.

Follow these steps:
1. Insert your FF VIII 1st disc.
2. Go to My Computer. Right click the drive which shows FF VIII and then choose UltraISO > Create CD/DVD image.
3. Now select where you want to save.
4. Wait for it to get over.
5. Now open your ePSXe emulator and click on File > Run ISO.
6. Select the file which you had just saved with UltraISO.

Yeah, I was using the ultraiso program to make the .iso instead of just going to my computer. Now the problem is the emulator wont run the .iso. I was able to get the emulator to work with my disc so I know my plug-ins are good. Could I have messed up somewhere in the process?

Just a black screen. I left it on for five minutes just incase I was wrong, but nope. Still a black screen.
