Antvirus, Anti Spyware, etc

NoD32 here, excellent AV, catches all sorts of stuff that isn't flagged by many other AV's. I also use Zonealarm firewall, really effective and easy to set up and use.

Depends on what you're doing though, if you spend a lot of time lurking in the murkier areas of the web then decent security is essential. For general web use and browsing though, free solutions like AVG seem perfectly good.

I heard Windows own firewall is so bad that you might as well turn it off and use comodo or zone alarm firewall....

I use it for years now and it works fine for me. I had Zonealarm (free edition), but I don't think that's much better.
