yeah as you can see, my computer is MUCH MUCH higher qaulity than any console ever made, this kid pisses me off going on to say that consoles own my computer and such, please ban people like him from this forum, also i only have a 360 because microsoft are a bunch of faggs who keep good games like ninja gaiden and halo from my pc to game on so i have no choice but to use crap hardware to play those games, and ive played 360 on my monitor 1080P IT LAGGGGS ike NO OTHER on halo it gets about 10 fps and cod like 15 fps... my pc gets 60 fps 1920x1200 on cod4 vsync max settings, would be over 100 without vsync

For the record there isn't currently any PC powerful enough to emulate a 360 or PS3 in software, this doesn't mean the consoles are more powerful. The relative specs of the PC hardware have absolutely no relevance when compared to the specs of the console in terms of emulation because all the instructions are processed in a different way. A top end PC will give better performance game for game than a 360 or PS3, however a top end PC isn't powerful enough to emulate all the functions of the various PS3 or 360 hardware.

Your post is borderline abusive, there's no need for it, these boards are about emulation and emulation support not some juvenile cock waving exercise about who's machine is best.

haha i was just pissed that kid boldly stated that consoles own pcs. it doesnt matter if the emulation wont work for xbox cuz microgay has such crap security restrictions...thats a software issue mostly imo

fact is microsoft forces people to buy games for a crappy console with exlusives that never come out for pc and its ridiculous. i want to play ninja gaiden 2 and halo 3 on my pc damit!!!

It has nothing to do with the security its about the different hardware and the different ways it has to be processed by a PC.
There aren't currently any processors that are fast enough to perform all the functions of a current gen consoles, processor, graphics chip and other hardware in software.

PC and console technology is getting more and more convergent with each generation, now that things are moving toward high def displays in the living room, it stands to reason that within another generation or two there will no longer be a defining line anyway with console and gaming PC both becoming irrelevant terms.

Hopefully it will help to stem the idiotic fanboy nonsense that see's people feeling affiliated to their machine and needing to feel defensive about their choices. There will just be gamers, people who can enjoy games across any platform without feeling the need to put other people's choices down.

If the kind of Elitism you and he both subscribe to prevailed across all other gamers then emulation probably wouldn't exist in the first place. I own a 360, a PS3 and a gaming PC, I like them equally because they all excel in different area's and the various innovations that they all make drives the whole industry forward, with them all learning and improving from one another. Which is as it should be. If we all stuck ourselves into a blinkered niche within our own little cliques the industry would shrivel and die.

You can't just compare the PS3's power with a PC running a PS3 emulator. Obviously the power required to run a PS3 emulator is a lot higher than the original console.

Word. This thread IS borderline stupid. The processing power required to run an Xbox 360/PS3 emulator on today's hardware, and keep in mind I said RUN not emulate at a playable level, is really high. Several times the consoles specifications in PC terms at the least.

I'm pretty sure if someone had the time and money to invest in reverse engineering a console and wrote specialized code that would take advantage of all 4 cores on a Quad core CPU, you might get something you can run. But not play anywhere close to an actual console even in your wildest dreams. Then you still need to write plugins to provide 3D rendering support via a PC's GPU, do it efficiently, and in a way that doesn't stress it to death. The video and sound subsytems alone are entire emulation projects these days, nevermind support CPU's or the multi-core CPU's that are in today's machines like the PS3.

This argument gets more and more stupid every year now, since consoles and PC's are beginning to blur their roles in the home. Consoles are also STATIC hardware platforms. Code can be extremely optimized and as the hardware ages and programmers are more experienced, they can do more amazing things with that hardware. But they can ALWAYS count on the hardware NEVER changing.

PC's are modular. Totally different architecture of hardware, and infinitely more difficult to program for and do so efficiently. The more you optimize something, the more you risk cutting out a user-base with a different hardware configuration than the one(s) you are optimizing for.

I don't understand why these conversations even happen anymore. Anyone with a brain can look at the progression of console emulation and correlate the data for themselves. With each new console emulated, the power necessary to faithfully emulate a new machine exponentially increases.

The silly old NES is a fine example of how the match works.. This is a machine with 16kb KB of memory and a CPU that runs at only 1.79Mhz. What did it take to barely run it? If you were lucky a 486 DX4 at 100Mhz would run it smoothly enough. A Pentium CPU at 90Mhz could run it pretty well and even them some of the CPU requirements have gone up into the 100Mhz range as factors like Windows are brought into play.

That is between 50 - 60 times the original power (math may be incorrect but not far off) of an NES machine to emulate it on a modern computer. This gap has closed substantially as developers starting dumping the graphics and sound loads onto our GPU and SPU's and not solely on our CPU's but it is still an incredibly strong example.

Yeah, it is kind of a silly argument to spend time fighting/supporting. If you can emulate PS3 or X-Box 360 games, you can, if you can't, you can't. Why argue about what will and will not pass, when we can just wait to see.

I can't say the same for PS3 because I don't know enough about it, but when emulating Xbox360 (on today's hardware), you can just forget about emulating it in software. If you're good with static binary translation (for an x86-64 architecture), then that would be your best bet, but then again, you'd need to have documentation on the .xex file format also. Then after that would be a matter of having proper hardware emulation, and vblank/vsync timing and emulation would just have to be done natively or using PC's vblank. But that would still require a multi-core CPU though to do it efficiently. Infact, since each Xbox360 core is capable of running 2 threads and each has it's own vector unit, I wouldn't expect the requirements to be anything less than maybe two i7s (to emulate 6 threads and 3 vector units) on an efficiently written static binary translator (PPC -> x86-64). If I were writing a 360 emulator, that's what I'd expect.
