CHD files help

Where does the CHD files belong? Do i just leave each one unzipped in the ROMS folder? And is it a MUST HAVE files?
I've tried searching, but couldn't quite found the answer.

Its a must have to play the games that require them. A CHD is basically a dump of any kind of mass storage device used by some games like Killer Instinct etc.
