I'm not sure about the DC.. I heard they could boot special made ISOs (the ones people download to fit on a CD) but that was later fixed.. But I'm not really up to speed with that, someone else here may know..

As for PS1... No you don't need a mod-chip, and why not just buy a PS2 Slim?

Then you can play both PS1 and PS2 backups, and no you don't need a mod-chip either.. But it will be more expensive unless you own a Gameshark Lite.

For regular PSX, just buy a boot CD, they come with the necesarry hardware to put in place to let your console think the door is always down. Most hardware can be taken it and out without a problem and doesn't void the warranty.

For PS2 Slim, if you can get one of the older, early models, a Gameshark Lite will work.. My bro gave me his older PS2 Slim and bought a new one for himself.. I can boot my PSX backups with the GS Lite, but not on his deck cause its newer.

I also purchased PS2 Boot DVD/CDs, and a flip-top mod for the lid. To play PSX games on a PS2 without a GS Lite CD, you will need a "Breaker Pro" boot CD, or whatever is out there now advertised as booting PS1 backups on the PS2 Slim.. The only place I found selling PSX boot CDs for PS2 was a mod-chip store in Canada (.ca extension if I recall) and it is expensive to import it but its up to you which route you take. If you have the cash a PS2 is a better investment, but a PSOne (the newer redesigned small model) and appropriate Boot Disc that comes w/hardware needed will work fine for you

That's all you need.. Mod chips are not worth it.. They are risky and require soldiering with a VERY steady hand, ability to identify chips and circuits so you don't fuck anything up, and if it burns out you're shit out of luck.. If a new console or game version out there can detect the chip you've bought, you'e fucked...

I always buy boot CD's /flip lids if I buy anything. They are inexpensive, low risk installs, and if you need to buy an updated version, that's a simple process.

hey thanks for the lenthy reply very intresting i think i need to do a bit more research then.

My reason for wanting the playstaion 1 is for the nostalga of playing the games on the orginal console, i have my pc connected to my pc and can play all the psx games with all the fancy shader effects and stuff but iv got the idea in my head now to buy a little shelf thing with several shelves and buy all the old consoles and stick em on it next to my tv :-D.

idealy i just want to be able to load up a back up in my ps1 and have it play no problem can i play us/jap games on a pal ps1 with no modchip?

Most boot swap discs tend to have a PAL/NTSC mode, and there are also CD tools out there to try and change your disc between regions.. That involves a lot more research though.. Pretty sure your TV has to be able to support the mode its booting into anyway. Its a real tricky subject I am not well versed in, but googling should get you plenty of info

So I think you shouldn't have much of an issue but I can't say for sure.. I'd just suggest getting a Slim PS2 and buy the flip top, PS2 boot DVD/Disc set, and a PSX boot CD.. That way in addition to your PSX games you can play your PS2 favorites as well.

When I purchased my flip top and boot set, it cost about $45 or $50.. $15 for the flip top, $30 for the boost disc set, shipping charges, etc.. thats USD currency of course. But just giving you an idea of cost.. Between the cost of the PSX boot disc and shipping my brother paid $30 to get his PSX on PS2 boot disc from Canada.
