FreezeSMS Vista help

I recently got a new PC with Vista. FreezeSMS is my favorite SMS emulator which runs flawlessly on XP. I'm able to run and play the games fine in Vista, however whenever I load or save a state or try to access the menu bar, instead of working instantly it takes anywhere from 2-5 minutes for it to respond. During that time, the sound doesn't work but I'm still able to control the games.

When I close the program using task manager, a error message comes up saying "core.dat is not responding". Freeze uses Directx and I understand DX10 causes problems with some programs that require Directx 9.

I've tried all the different compatibility settings Vista provides and I'm relatively new to dealing with directx outside of installing it but heard that Vista can't function without DX10 so replacing it with 9 is out of the question. Is this true? Any ideas how to fix this problem in Vista?
