Default Transfer files fromVista laptop to desktop

I had troubles configureing a connection between my Vista windows laptop and my XP desktop. What am i doing wrong? Both connected eithernet cord to the same router. Why is it not showing up on either computer?

I do not have Vista I have XP on XP all I did was use the eithernet cord without the router Connected then both together

If you have a USB Drive why not use that to Transfer the files.

You can't just use a CAT5 cable like that.. You need a Crossover cable, to be able to hook two PC's up without a router, switch, or hub..

    Anyway

Make sure both PC's have file sharing enabled. Make sure they are in the same workgroup, and make sure you have folders setup to share, and not just the default..

You should at least be able to see the XP's shared drives/files from the Vista machine

I thought the same thing until I gave it a try. Apparently newer networking cards have the ability to sense when there is a direct connection with just a cable.

I had the same trouble when trying to copy over files onto a Vista laptop from my desktop. The solution was to uninstall Norton. In fact, if there is any antivirus on the laptop, just uninstall it.

Good that you got it sorted out..

Norton is infamous for fucking up your shit any which way it can, even shit that seems unrelated..

The only thing I have, worth using, is Norton Ghost..

The rest I trust to my router and NOD32 / Spybot S&D
