Default Boot OS off Flash Drive

Is there a way to install and then boot an OS off a flash drive?

I want to do this so I could try out different OS's without messing with my Harddrive. Mainly cause I just had to format my Hardrive. Lost about 30gigs of music. I would not be so mad, but I cant use torrent clients right now.

    Thanks for any help

UPDATE: I think that only works if I have XP already installed. What Im looking for, I need something so I can install older version of Windows and Linux OS's then boot them off the Flash drive.

I dont know how to say it better

I think your motherboard/BIOS must support USB boot.

And the OS that you are installing on a flash drive has to be OK with that. Windows doesn't like to be portable, and older versions would probably just now have any idea what is going on, and therefore just not work. You will have to problem with something like Ubuntu, however. If you want to try out Linux you can always just download a "live cd".
