You might be out of luck. Most games online components register the key and then it can't be used by someone else so you will probably need to get the original 'key' from your friend. By using a key gen or a secondhand key you will probably just keep getting told that the key is already registered to another user.

Then a keygen should get it installed on your PC, but is unlikely to get you online (if there are any servers still running it, its a pretty old game).
