ps games not saving in ps2

Can any one tell me why i can play FF8 and FF9 on my ps2 but they wont acknoledge the memory card when i try to save. I even bought a new memory card and formatted it. What can i do?

You need to use PS1 memory card, not the actual PS2 memory card (since PS1 games won't recognize PS2 memory card).
