Thread: Help with Project 64k

    Default Help with Project 64k

Basically, I want to play Super Smash Bros online. I normally use 1964 to play it, and the game runs fine. Unfortunately, when I try to play online using 1964, it names the Rom something stupid and wont let me join anyone's game.

So I load up Project 64k, and it will let me join games and host them, no problems. BUT, the game runs slow on Project 64k with speeds of about 20fps, compared to the 60fps I get on 1964.

Is there anything I can do to make Project 64k run quicker? I've messed with a lot of options and downloaded tons of plug-ins, but it's still the same no matter what I try. (The game even runs fast on the normal Project 64! Just not on 64k!)

I'm on a 2.0ghz P4 processor with 1gb or RAM and a nVidia GeForce 6200 256mb card, definately enough to run any N64 emulator, but for some reason, 64k runs slow...

So in a nutshell, I'm looking for the lowest fastest options available. Anything that will speed up gameplay really, and video plugins and options I can enable/disable.

    Any help is greatly appriciated.

Sorry for the double post guys, but I really wanna get this emulator workin.

Please, anyone know how I can improve my FPS rate? I mean, I'm gettin like 20 FPS, whilst on Project 64 1.6 I'm gettin a healthy 60 FPS. I have no idea why it's doin this, and I'd like to eliminate it.

If it helps, when I load up SSB, the title and menu's are fine, then when I get to character select my FPS drops to 20.

    MUCH appriciated advance thankyou!!!

Well, you can try setting a smaller resolution or change 32bits down to 16bits in the video plugins to get more speed, though more familiar with PJ64 1.7, but sounds more like a video plugin thing, so try to mess around a bit. Also try disabling texture and graphic effects. Every bit helps gain that extra speed, but may have to "suffer" graphic wise to gain it.

Hmm well as I say, it runs fine on Project 64. I use 1.6 and it runs perfectly just as most other games do. I have most default things enabled too.

Project 64k is a different matter though, for some reason it just decides to slow down. As far as I am aware, I have taken settings to 16bits, and no difference. I have also changed the resolution, but whether it is on fullscreen, or something as small as 240 x 360 (just an example), it still gets to about 20/30 FPS on the character select screen and during gameply.

If absolutely anyone has any suggestions please post as I am very eager to play SSB 64 online and can't stand the slowdown I experience. (Just to clarify it is not my lag, as I was recieving around 30ms ping and the game was still going very slowly, whether it was offline or online.)

There has to be SOMEONE on these forums that knows how to make Project 64k work at the lowest possible demands, to speed it up.

For pj64k try disabling the fps limiter(I think the shortcut is f4), but it might run too fast.

    Thx for the suggestion.

Hmmm...it seems the menu's run erratically fast, but when I get onto char selection screen, or gameplay, it goes back down to 20/30 FPS

    Anyone know why this is?

Sorry, but it might be possible the emulator is not made to run at full speed with the game itself. Take PJ64 v1.7 for example, no matter what settings you change, certain games will lag, but until they fix the problem in the next version... Castlevania works better on v1.6 then on v1.7, which lags like hell since they changed the Self-MODS... You might have to try another emulator with it. PJ64 v1.6 works so so with it, but maybe you might want to try Mupen64, though here: http://mupen64.emulation64.com/

Certain emulators work better with certain games, though a seemingly problem with the N64.... Sucks for us, but no emulator is perfect...

Wish I could help ya, but nothing I can do.

Thats exactly the issue. In many cases performance issues have nothing to do with your PC or settings and are all about the way the emulation is handled. The last thing you can try is disabling the sound as sometimes dependent on how the sound is handled it can give a massive performance hit with emulation.
