They're just additional buttons that can have different uses depending of the game. The NES has only two primary buttons (A and B) while the SNES has 4 more buttons (X, Y, L and R). The difference is that L and R buttons are placed atop the controller, so they're called triggers, like a gun.

Yah, I know what they "are", but I mean with using th emulator (ZSNES) which keys are used for those commands? (Also, what about the start and select button =D)?
Look at the input configuration (Config --> Input #X, where X is the gamepad number you want to configure).
