try a BOOTDISK for DOS
its sometimes a little bit difficult to find dos drivers for onboard soundcards, but you should get it at soundcard-drivers.com (after the !%(*)!!! registration process)
you also need mouse driver and sometimes a joystick driver (if you own one
you can even program a menue in the config.sys file, so that every game works perfect.
i can explain how to write it if someone wants to make a bootdisk.

Makes me squirm reading this stuff. I grew up with dos, so of course I can't understand what's so difficult about it.
On the other hand I don't have xp or dosbox... :P
Dos Mate
If you find dosbox too hard to use you can always try Dos Mate which is not as good as DosBox but it alot easier to use as it is styled like modern emulators such as epsxe.
