Thread: N64 USB Adapter will not work

  1. #1

Default N64 USB Adapter will not work

I recently bought a N64 USB Adapter off ebay, and connected it with my grey N64 controller (original). It's simply plug and play, so I plugged it in but it doesn't work.

this is the model i bought:http://cgi.ebay.com/Nintendo-64-PS2-...QQcmdZViewItem

I had to manually install the driver, and it finally got to work, where I could calibrate through control panel/ printers and other hardware/ game controllers.

So now, my computer detects it, because I can calibrate it and it fully reads all the buttons and joystick, but my emulator Project64 v.1.6 doesn't read it. Everytime I load it up, the game doesn't respond to any of the controller buttons.

Does anyone know what's going on? If anyone could please help me...

    I see your problem.
Go to Option > Configure controller plugin and change the controls to your USB controller.

I tried that, and it still doesn't work. I set the drag-down menu to show my 4-axis 16 button controller, and I did it for every player in the tab menu. Then I clicked the box that says "controller plugged in" and it still does nothing.

    Hey, j4cks0ne23. A few things..

One if you are using XP, you should not have install a driver. However if you did you should be ok. Make sure you have a HID device in Device manager. This is all you need with that adapter. If you see it working in game controllers, in you control panel as you said then you are all set. Try this..

One don't try only one plugin there should be 3 or 4, experiment with the rest.
Make sure plugged in is checked!
Make sure you control is select for the device.
Try more then one game, it may be the emulation.

If nothing else screen shot the plugin page and post it here.

I bought one of these adapters recently also. It works well once you figure out its quirks.

A step I didn't see posted is..have you gone in and assigned the buttons in project64? It doesn't automatically know what to do. You have to tell it which button to equate with L, R, start, etc. Also check the switch on the side to make sure the N64 port is active rather than the PS port.

Here's some quirks I've noticed with mine. Wondering if anyone else has come across the same or not.

When plugging in the adapter a playstation controller can not be plugged in or windows won't recognize the adapter.

One it is plugged in and recognized, a playstation controller must be plugged in to calibrate the n64 stick. If not then the n64 freaks out and the buttons, axis go crazy and cant be calibrated.

Once all that is accounted for it works nicely. I don't think its my n64 stick thats a problem since it works well once everything is recognized properly. Seems like maybe a flaw in the adapter itself.

    Follow ups..

When plugging in the adapter a playstation controller can not be plugged in or windows won't recognize the adapter.
    - I have not noticed, I have the adapter with the green red lights and its one or the other.. no troubles switching back and forth, even on the fly..

One it is plugged in and recognized, a playstation controller must be plugged in to calibrate the n64 stick. If not then the n64 freaks out and the buttons, axis go crazy and cant be calibrated.
    - this is only on some n64 sticks. Others work fine. not sure what batch does or does not...

Once all that is accounted for it works nicely. I don't think its my n64 stick thats a problem since it works well once everything is recognized properly. Seems like maybe a flaw in the adapter itself.

    - It is the n64 that cause the craziness but its is not Nintendos fault, as you said its a design flaw. It is corrected with the adopoid n64 only adapter..

i went ahead and assigned the buttons, and most of them work now. the only problem i have now is the analog stick (joystick)...it doesn't register. it works in the calibration menu, but it just doesn't register. do i need to get a ps2 controller and calibrate it or what?

    no, ..

Thats a strange one, only possibility is you assigned keys to the joystick directions.. Otherwise I'm not sure.
