    Default DVD+RW Erasing

Can I just write over the DVD+RW like a VHS or do I need to do a full-erase using some sort of program before I can put another movie?

You need to completely erase the contents like as if it were a CDRW. Windows, Nero, Alcohol...etc will do it.

There are two ways of erasing a RW disc. The soft method just erases (or overwrite) the boot or main sector (I don't really know how that sector is called) so it can be overwritten again and it takes less than a minute. The full method overwrites the whole disc and can take up to 20 minutes, depending of the capacity.

The bad thing is that a RW disc doesn't last long forever. There's a certain number of times to rewrite.

It depends of the material of the disc. Some can last up to 10 times, others 100, others 1000 and some can get past that limit.
