1964 emulator question

Hi i've just downloaded the 1964 emulator for nintendo64 and have got the game banjo kazooie on it (don't ask) and i have set the controls for the game but when i start the game up it keeps saying 'No Controller' and i can't get into the main menu of the game. Have I forgotten to do something or do I need to go and buy a joystick or something?

oh i also wanted to mention that i'd like to play the game using the keyboard

Go to your input plugin configuration and make sure it's enabled/plugged.
