Emulator Problem: Visual Boy Advance Save State Problems

So, I've been having this problem for quite a while lately. Whenever I am playing a GBA or GBC game on the Visual Boy Advance (lets say Fire Emblem 7 and Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons), I tend to use save states when dealing with certain sections of the game. After I got past those sections and go further into the game, I would do an in-game save and close the game. The next time I load the Visual Boy Advance, whether it be a day or a week, I would try to load those games up and try to continue where I left off. The moment I load those games, the game auto-loads the save state of that game, thus losing all the progress I've made after that point. None of the other emulators I have had this problem and I never had this problem with the Visual Boy Advance years ago.

Anyone here have any ideas on how to fix this Auto-loading Save State problem?
