Is there anyway I can make the screen bigger (apart from obviously changing the screen resolution)? :)

If you are talk about GBA then yes you can. For NDS, nope but in the near future, perhaps. :)

my copy of no$gba seems to have a way of going double size on one screen for ds. it came with a program called NDS2xGL2.exe.

Yeah, someone made one for it but I won't touch it. I will wait for the developer of no$gba to improvement in the near future. I do not care about the double size....not now. :p
