Greetings all...

I'd like to know if a device exists which allows a reverse process to extracting ROM images from a cartridge and transferring to PC. I.e. a device which allows you to play ROM files from a hard drive or other storage device on the N64.

The ideal set up would be a cartridge which plugs into the N64, and has an slot for an IDE cable. The HDD would be powered externally. It could then offer a menu to browse ROMs on an "N64 ROMs" FAT partition. It could have on-board RAM if necessary for stability, etc.

It seems like a pretty obvious invention. If anyone can tell me where I can buy a device which operates along these or similar lines, I'd love to know. A USB mass-storage or iPod adapter would also be an option. It's just to get the convenience/quality of native N64 execution, and kind of a matter of preference..

TIA

After some searching, I discovered the Doctor V64 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_V64), Z64 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z64) and CD64 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD64_%28Nintendo%29), which matches the description, although note quite. They were discussed on these forums here (http://forums.emulator-zone.com/showthread.php?t=9099&highlight=cd64) and here (http://forums.emulator-zone.com/showthread.php?t=7336&highlight=doctor), and Robert Webb has some info on the devices also (http://www.robwebb.clara.co.uk/backup/).

The CD64 is closest to what I would like. The others seem to be development tools, and I'd rather not use ZIP Diskettes. Unfortunately all of these devices seem to be out of production and no clones have emerged. There's very little on eBay also - though there was one listed here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110111241726) for GBP150 recently.

I would imagine the hardware used in these devices would be commodities by now, allowing cheap manufacture and sale; but they're still pretty expensive.

Anyone have any idea where I could purchase a CD64, or perhaps there's the possibility of a clone in development, or a HDD64??
