1964 Emulator Controller Problem

Hey all, I'm trying to play Paper Mario on the 1964 emulator (PJ64 keeps shutting down and getting errors), but when I configure the keyboard controls, they never work. What am I doing wrong? All feedback is appreciated.

I have never used 1964 for a long time . most games work for me frequently.

I keep getting graphics errors, and PJ64 will shut down whenever I run Paper Mario. But when I use 1964, it runs fine, it's just that the controls won't work, even when I set them.
