guys,

any info on the above. i'm using xp pro sp2 with CA security suite. i've been using u torrent for 5 days now and find it excellent - what you dload is what you get(not like limewire). my only problem is that it keeps crashing my pc every so often. i lose my speed, seeds and trackers and have to wait for everything to reconnect, even then it sometimes crashes 5 mins later - this is driving me mad, any ideas ??

Have you used anything else like BitComet? Did you read the uTorrent's website for this problem?

I use it for about a year now, but I never had any problems.

It could be a corrupt incomplete download. Have you setup port forwarding?

How is it crashing?

*shiver Ares - Right now that is horrible with torrent files.*

I never had problems with uTorrent either. I've been using BitComet for a long time until I entered the scene of private torrents, which they don't allow us the use of BitComet because of cheating the upload/download ratio.

bitcomet already has a pretty bad rep and the newest version is so bloated. Utorrent is very nice.. never had any problems, and I'm currently using the latest beta.

uTorrent is fantastic.

uTorrent is fantastic.

Yes, but it's a pity that it has been bought by BitTorrent's ineventor, Bram Cohen. I doubt there will be any more updates to this client :(

Am I the only person that realizes that this is in the wrong section?

Apparently so. But since I happen to be around, I have happily accommodated us both.

thanks for response,

I have never used utorrent until 5-6 weeks ago, I have always used limewire. The speeds I'm getting from utorrent range from 150 - 350kbs which is astonishing compared to LW.

Port forwarding - not sure what you mean, have checked all the settings with the ports automatically detected.

I tried going into task manager and shutting down some of the programs to see if any were conflicting with utorrent but guess what - didn't work.

I don't want to give utorrent the boot as i don't get that kind of speed anywhere else I just need to sort this out - it's driving me insane.

It's got to the point where I cant use the pc if I'm d/l because I might lose what i'm working on when it crashes.

Fable - oops wrong section, what section should this be in ??

try reading through the utorrent faq: http://utorrent.com/faq.php

there shouldn't be a problem with it. Most likely it's something else on your computer. What version of windows are you using and how old is your computer?

use azureus ^_^

azureus and utorrent are the exact opposite. Azureus is open source and has a ton of customization but is bloated. Utorrent is extremely simple and uses almost no system resources.

But it's a clear alternative to uTorrent.

I prefer Azureus myself, as uTorrent for some reason kills our Internet here. It has happened both on my PC and my brothers PC.

I switched to utorrent, Azureus killed my resources.

there are many other alternatives besides utorrent and azureus:

I don't think about UTorrent carshes your system.
That must be something other what crashes your system .
Im using uTorrnet and it never didn't crash my system..If you think utorrent is crashing your system , try another Program like: "Azerus" , "Ares" or something other! :excl:

All I could get out of that was something about Utorrent not crashing his PC so it must be the same on everyones computer...

Which is not true by any stretch.

anyone got it fixed?
try setting the compatibility settings to [NT 4]

never had problems with ut, second opt with be bitcomet and falling in the ranks would be bittornado / azerous [java that's why it's slow! /same as open office and LW]
I switched to utorrent, Azureus killed my resources.

I don't have any speed issues with Azureus.

its a fact that Java is slow :)
resource hogging isn't really noticeable for high end PC's -usually 800mhz and up and 192 + ram wouldnt notice it

but for less than that, speed can be really a huge issue.

uTorrent has better speed than others i see.:)
When i used Azerus , it downloaded something with slowest speed in 1Kb.
When i try BitCommet , it downloaded something with slow speed 13Kb.:(
But when i used uTorrent , it downloads so fast in 60Kb.:D
I think uTorrent is the best , and it never didn't crash my system..:excl:

hmm, your connection speed should really dictate the speeds your getting, perhaps you tested it on different torrents?
[slow seeder/peers=slow rates, fast seeder/peers=fast rates]
in any case, you MUST configure it properly :)

My internet speed is 512KB\Ps..:)
I tried a good seed rate and a fast torrent in three programs..:excl:

Then logically that's not resource hogging, that's just people running something on an underpowered machine - like every program most people have used on an older PC at some point in history.. Are they all bloated resource hogs too?

No, Azureus shouldn't be taking up 100+ MB of RAM when it operation, but it does. The issue isn't really anything to do with JAVA being "slow" though, it has to do with the way Azereus was programed.

There are legitimate gripes for not using the program, but blaming it on JAVA isn't going to get you anywhere. JAVA can be quite fast and suitable for many things these days, yes as a result of faster computers, but again that raises the issue of the progress of technology, not inefficiency. Nothing is ever 100% efficient these days anyhow, or we'd all be using stuff coded in assembler, etc

Here is a pretty educating (http://devnulled.com/content/2007/02/correcting-logical-fallacies-why-java-is-not-slow/) look into what modern JAVA really does, and why it is in fact, not that slow.
